Prevention Project Committee

The Prevention Project Committee is a diverse group of professionals that work collaboratively to offer prevention services for youth in Williamsburg, James City and York County. Over the last five years, the membership has focused its efforts toward promoting science-based family and school programming into the community. Recently they have begun to explore environmental strategies, and are in the process of exploring options to help youth have a voice in initiatives.

If you are interested in becoming a member of the HTSAC Prevention Project Committee, please complete a membership application and indicate where you would like to assist in addressing substance abuse prevention issues. An email will be sent to you with upcoming Prevention Project Committee meetings.

Universal prevention are strategies designed to address an entire population with messages and programs aimed at preventing or delaying the abuse of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

Selective prevention strategies target subsets of the total population that are deemed to be at risk for substance abuse by virtue of their membership in a particular population segment -for example, children of alcoholics, dropouts, or students who are failing academically.

Indicated prevention strategies are designed to prevent the onset of substance abuse in individuals who do not meet DSM-IV criteria for addiction, but who are showing early danger signs, such as falling grades and consumption of alcohol, tobacco, marijuana, and/or inhalants.
